A Chinese expert said an Indian official is merely trying to boost his country`s pride when he said China has been culturally controlled by India.
The statement was made by India`s home minister Rajnath Singh at a nationwide tourism festival on Monday, according to the country`s news agency PTI.
Singh quoted Chinese scholar Hu Shi (1891-1962), saying Hu "wrote that India culturally controlled and dominated China for more than 2,000 years without sending a single soldier. That is the effect of India."
"If China has been controlled culturally by any country, it is India and this fact was accepted by Hu Shi," Singh said.
However, Zhang Yiwu, a professor of culture at Peking University, disagrees.
By saying India`s impact on Chinese culture, Hu was simply referring to the spread of Buddhism during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 - 220 AD), which was embraced by the Chinese, Zhang said.
Zhang added Buddhism has little to do with contemporary India, whose mainstream religion is Hinduism.
"Singh is merely trying to boost national pride," Zhang noted.
Zhang Yiwu is a senior fellow of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China.
