On October 3rd, 2018, the former president of Slovenia, Mr. Danilo Türk, who is also the non-resident senior fellow of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China (RDCY), has paid a visit to the Silk Road School of Renmin University in Suzhou. In the afternoon, Mr. Türk joined a symposium with the students from the Silk Road School, together with Lu Jie, the vice dean of the Silk Road School in Suzhou as well as the International school, Chen Chao, the executive director of the international affairs department in Suzhou campus of RUC, and Guan Zhaoyu, the associate researcher of RDCY.
The theme of the symposium is "China and the World under the Belt and Road Initiative". During the discussion, Mr. Türk and the professors and students of Silk Road School made in-depth exchanges on topics like the construction and cooperation of “the Belt and Road Initiative”, state relations, social development, global economic issues, and career development. Coming from nearly 20 different countries, those students shares different cultural and geographical backgrounds which helped them to think about those issues in multiple ways, including different perspectives on the “Belt and Road Initiative” and different views on current major issues related to international relations. Mr. Türk expressed his appreciation for the high-level questions of the students and made excellent responses with sharing his ideas.
Such a collision of ideas has greatly benefited the students, and at the same time, Mr. Türk gave high praise on the Silk Road School's philosophy and way of running the school. After the symposium, Mr. Türk was pleased to write a note for the Silk Road School, he mentioned:
The Renmin University of China has taken a brilliant decision to establish the Silk Road School in Suzhou. I had the opportunity to interact with the first generation of students and I was impressed by the wide range of the expertise and interests, as well as by their sensitivity in demonstrating some of the most difficult problems of our era with knowledge and responsibility. I wish students and their professors great success.
Danilo Türk is a senior politician, world renowned diplomat, jurist, and international expert, who now serves as the Chairman of the Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace and non-resident senior fellow of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China (RDCY). In 1982, he obtained his PhD from Law School of Ljubljana University in Slovenia and received a full-time job as an assistant professor at the University in Ljubljana's Faculty of Law. In 1992, Türk was the Slovenia’s ambassador to the United States. Between 1998 and 1999, he served as the Slovene representative to the United Nations Security Council and addressed regional issues in places like Kosovo, Iraq and Congo. Danilo Türk was the UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs from 2000 to 2005 and served as the vice dean at the University of Ljubljana of Law in 2006. In November 2007, he was elected as the president of Slovenia. Danilo Türk has run in the UN Secretary-General election for 2017-2021.
