Annual Symposium of China Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation held in Beijing

On December 29th, hosted by the Chinese Council of the BRICS National Think Tank Cooperation (CCBTC) and the Renmin University of China, and organized by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RDCY), China Council for BRICS Think Tank Cooperation Annual Meeting and First Wanshou Forum on International Situation was held in Beijing, with the theme of “China and the World in the New Era”. Representatives from 90 council members and several scholars from the university think tank conducted a discussion on the topics such as future work plan of the Chinese Council, "Great Power Relations and Global Governance", “Belt and Road and South-South Cooperation”.

Luan Jianzhang, Secretary-General of the CCBTC reviewed the work in 2018 and looked forward to the work in 2019. He said that the CCBTC achieved fruitful results and good in the world in 2018 and in 2019, adhering to the purpose of serving the BRICS countries and South-South cooperation, Chinese Council will continuously expand research and exchanges with the BRICS countries and developing countries, and promote the in-depth development of cooperation in various fields.

Huang Yiyang, China's Sous-Sherpa for BRICS Affairs and the deputy director of the Department of International Economics of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the CCBTC actively made suggestions for the BRICS cooperation in 2018 and formed a number of high-quality research reports, effectively serving the BRICS and South-South cooperation. He pointed out that under the new situation, China needs to rely on the vast number of developing countries to defend multilateralism and the free trade system and create a good international environment for China to achieve the goal of "two one hundred years".

Professor Jin Canrong, Associate Dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China, delivered a luncheon speech. Starting from the economic situation in 2018, he talked about how to understand the two major theories of the great changes in the past 100 years and the fourth industrial revolution, and finally settled on the challenges facing China's diplomacy. He said that in general, there are three characteristics in 2018, that is, competition among major powers has become the main theme, trade friction has been a long-term situation, and regional situations are diverging.

In the afternoon, the first Wanshou Forum on International Situation was held. Liu Wei, President of Renmin University of China, Long Guoqiang, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, Meng Xiangqing, professor of the National Security College of the National Defense University, Zhou Qiangwu, director of the International Finance and Economics Center of the Ministry of Finance, and Sun Jiakang, deputy secretary of the China Ocean Shipping Group, attended the Forum and delivered keynote speeches. In the following sub-forums, there are more than 30 experts participated in each panel, and the experts conducted lively discussions.
