On the evening of April 9th, RDCY Seminar Series No.108 was held in Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China (RDCY). Professor Wang Jianhua from the School of Foreign Languages at Renmin University of China (RUC) was invited to give a lecture on the “Belt and Road” (B&R) and cultural exchanges, as well as the translation that should be paid attention to in communicating with the countries along the B&R.
In his speech, Professor Wang said that in the exchange with the countries along the B&R, due to the differences in culture and ways of thinking among the different countries, we must widen our horizons to have a deep understanding for other countries’ culture, and greatly open up our mind to understand them clearly and thoroughly.
He gave a concrete explanation from five aspects. First, most of the countries along the B&R are emerging economies and developing countries, which are generally in a period of economic growth and enjoy broader prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation.
Second, China’s “ Belt and Road” initiative has been advancing rapidly with many achievements, such as the construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi railway and China-Kazakhstan logistics base.
The third is to strengthen the construction of the external discourse system and the cultural exchanges. Translation quality represents country’s foreign language ability to some extent. The accuracy on translation is conducive to the construction of the “Belt and One” and the validity and strength of the Chinese culture publicity.
Fourth, language policy and language planning should be given the priority. There are two main aspects to be considered. One is to ensure national stability and economic development and improve the overall competitiveness of Chinese; the other is to open more Confucius Institutes and overseas Chinese academic research centers in the world to further expand the market for overseas Chinese education.
The fifth is to strengthen the cultural awareness in the countries and regions along the “Belt and Road”. Understanding the diversity and characteristics of different cultures deeply will lead us to greatly enrich our mind in the exchange, which will also obtain development opportunities for the countries along the route.
