CCTV: Chinese people "strive for survival" in the past, "pursue better life" now

2018-03-06

This year marks the first year of fully implementing the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and a crucial year for securing a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects as well as embarking on the implementation of the 13th Five-Year Plan.

CCTV-4 "China News" program opens up a special report on "China`s New Era" . The first phase invites Wang Wen, executive dean of Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, to talk with the CCTV anchor Zhou Yingfeng on the "two sessions" and the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress, with the expectation to explain China`s development in detail.

In his interview, Wang noted that the Li Keqiang’s government work report this year involves a lot of efforts related to people`s lives, such as canceling the nationwide roaming charges and raising the threshold for personal income tax. According to statistics, the word “people” was  mentioned over 30 times in the government work report, which indicated that the report is people-centered and will guide Chinese people`s life in the coming year.

Wang also said that it is very meaningful to mention the word "life" in the report of the 19th CPC Congress. Although this term is usually mentioned frequently in daily life, it is seldom seen in reports. The previous reports put more attention on striving for survival, then from "striving for survival" in the past to "pursuing better life" now marked a great improvement in China`s development.

At present, China has reached the stage of pursuing for the better life. Not all countries have the ability to talk about life. With China`s basic necessities of life improving greatly, the report of 19th CPC National Congress and government work report released today respond to people`s common pursuit of life in the new era and more importantly respond to the people`s demand for future life after China has reached a new stage, Wang added in the interview.

He emphasized that as socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, the principal contradiction facing Chinese society has evolved. What we now face is the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people`s ever-growing needs for a better life. It may take a long time to realize the goal of beautiful life, and China will still face tough reforms in the future, so we must insist on the people-centered development.
